Short research description:

I am a marine ecologist interested in biodiversity and food-web interactions. Since 1982 I have worked on the coastal and pelagic systems of the brackish Baltic Sea and also since 2002 on sea-ice ecology in the Arctic Ocean. In the latter project I use metagenomics and metatranscriptomics. In my work with carotenoids I analyse mainly phytoplankton, zooplankton and fish samples to study the transfer and transformation of carotenoids in the pelagic food web. I have especially focussed on the production and role of astaxanthin in the marine food web. I also cooperate with the company AstaReal AB in Stockholm, a commercial producer of astaxanthin (from the microalga Haematococcus) for the health industry.
