Short research description:

Main topic research regards the investigation of carotenoid biosynthesis by through metabolic engineering and reverse genetics in Solanaceae. Using genetic engineering techniques, over the past decade "Golden" tomato fruits and potato tubers have been produced, which contain very levels of beta-carotene (provitamin A). The laboratory has facilities and advanced methods for metabolic profiling. Protocols for the extraction and analysis of the polar (amino acids, sugars, organic acids, flavonoids, alkaloids, etc.) and non-polar (fatty acids, sterols, carotenoids, tocopherols, etc.) and volatile metabolome have been developed and exploited in a series of studies. In addition, the group uses systems biology approaches based on the use of gene ontology, gene clustering algorithms and correlation analysis, to identify transcripts or metabolites associated with a particular genotype or treatment.
