Short research description: 

I did my doctoral thesis in the Plant Biochemistry Department of the Univ. Of Seville with a grant from the MEC (1997). I have worked in different aspects of Plant Biotechnology and Biochemical Engineering in institutions such as Plant Biochemistry Dpt. (Lund University, Sweden), the Rothamsted Agriculture Experimental Station (UK), the Plant Breeding Max Plank Institute (Colony, Germany) or the Institute for Biotechnology and Bioengineering of the Higher Technical Institute (Lisbon, Portugal), where I enjoyed an EU grant -Marie Curi, from the Biotechnology Area. Since March 2018 I am Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in the University of Huelva (Spain). I have published more than 50 high impact articles, five invention patents and more than 90 communications to specialized congresses. I have supervised 12 master thesis projects and four doctoral theses in the field of microalgae biotechnology, four other theses are now in progress. I have participated in 12 competitive projects. In 2003, I launched a new line on the genetic manipulation of microalgae, within the scope of a "Ramón y Cajal" contract. Since 2004 I have coordinated as IP two research projects of the Spanish Ministry of Science and a project of excellence of the Andalucian Goverment about the improvement of the nutritional characteristics of the microalgae through their genetic manipulation of the carotenoid pathway. I am presently supervising a project about the use of microalgae as a vehicle for oral vaccines in aquaculture and an INTERREG project entitled ALGRED + in which 9 Spanish and Portuguese entities participate, in which enhancement of carotenoid pathway plays a key role.
